H. E. Sheikh Meshal bin Hamad Al-Thani, Qatar's Ambassador to the U.S. and Chair of the Qatar Harvey Fund, yesterday announced a $1.7 million grant to the Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA) community center in Houston. The grant will enable repairs to MECA’s historic building, renovate the theater, install an elevator and support 16 three-year student scholarships.

MECA is funded through the United Way of Greater Houston, Brown Foundation, Inc., Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts, Kinder Morgan Foundation, Old Sixth Ward TIRZ, SAM’s (Fannin), FValdezLaw, PC., American General Matching Gifts, Creating a Brighter Future Individual donors, Belinda & Lee Smith, the Brown Foundation, Inc., British Petroleum, Blue Bull, Cotemar, Exxon Mobil, Arts Access Initiave, Shell, and Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Government funding is provided by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance, the Texas Commission on the Arts, HCDE, and CASE for Kids - City Connections.
MECA is a member of the National Performance Network, the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, and the National Guild for Community Arts Education.
