March 12th, 2010 FotoFest: Multicultural Spectrum- Visual Art Exhibit March 12- April 25 Multicultural Spectrum is an exhibition which will showcase the work of two photographers, Noemi Madrid and Faye Safo. Working from two different locations- Safo in New York City and Madrid in Houston- their works is a unique and interesting conversation of contemporary culture in the American landscape.

March 17th, 2010Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Festival- Visual Art Exhibit March 17th- April 30th. In collaboration with the National Museum of Mexican Art and the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston.
Exhibit of local Latina artists, inspired by seventeenth century Mexican nun, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651-1695), one of the greatest poets and playwrights of her time, and the first person in the Americas to argue in writing for the rights of women to be educated. Open to all Latina artists within the community. All applications must be submitted by March 1, 2010.

March 22nd, 2010 Immigration workshop with Jose Torres Tama March 22 - March 25, 2010 NPN Creation Project Residency Workshop with José Torres Tama, an immigrant, born in Ecuador and raised in New Jersey and New York since the age of seven. The purpose of this bilingual residency is to assist in eradicating unwarranted fears of the Spanish language and to gather information for a new bilingual multimedia solo by Jose Torres Tama, which will be presented at MECA in October 2010. Participants will be asked to track their family heritage through performance activities and dramatic exercises. Participants will also engage in exploring the extensive history of immigrants that have transformed the complexion and culture of the United States and some of the pertinent questions at the heart of the immigrant debate such as: “If the country has been built on immigrant and slave labor, who has a right to call this land their land? Who can be labeled an alien in the land of the free?”

April 24th, 2010Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Festival – “Chela In collaboration with the National Museum of Mexican Art and the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston.
Chela written and starring Dulce Maria Solis, is a dynamic, bilingual, one-woman, multimedia, theatrical piece based on the intimate life of the playwright’s mother. This original story, told from the mother’s point of view, follows Chela from México to America, from martyrdom to self-worth and from ignorance to self-discovery. You will witness a woman’s insurmountable challenge to find love and life worth living for, in spite of her-self.

May 7th, 2010Cinco on Cinco Pianist Omar Herrera-Arizmendi "Artist in Residence" and friends will showcase traditional and contemporary music in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Mr. Herrera-Arizmendi received a master’s degree in music from Rice University in May 2003. Prior to that, Herrera-Arizmendi was awarded a bachelor’s in music in 2000 from the University of Texas-Austin. Both of these degrees were awarded with a specialization in Piano Performance. Presently, Herrera-Arizmendi is pursuing a doctorate at the University of Houston specializing in classical music from Mexico and Latin America. Specifically the music composed for piano solo and chamber ensemble.

July 17th, 2010 Mariachi Vargas Master Workshop and Concert Mariachi Vargas is known throughout the world as "El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo". Now in their 5th generation, the group has recorded over 60 CDs and has been featured in more than 200 films and music videos. The group is recognized for touring with Linda Ronstadt in her "Canciones de Mi Padre" tour, for the recent production of "Mariachi: The Spirit of Mexico" airing nationally on PBS and for its latest recording of traditional ballads with Mexico's superstar Luis Miguel. The group will perform selections from their latest CD. Mariachi Vargas will hold a one-day master workshop that will include multi-level classes of technique and repertoire.

September 17th, 2010 LIENZO, Musica Mosaico de Mexico NPN Creation Project Residency LIENZO, Musica Mosaico de Mexico - written and directed by P. Villon is a theatrical musical detailing the history, music, and dance of the Mexican Revolution and celebrating the valor of women involved. LIENZO is a fictional story that tries to paint a face, a person, into the famous corridos, songs and dances with a woman memorialized in the title such as Juan Gallo, La Adelita, La Coronela, La Marieta, La Valentina, La Rielera, and many others.

October 29th, 2010Ochpaniztli – “the sweeping of roads” Ochpaniztli – “the sweeping of roads” is a time of year when the people of Mexico partake in a ceremonial cleanse of their homes and community. Far beyond the literal cleaning of a space, a cleanse can also take on a spiritual element. The Historic Dow School, MECA’s home since 1993 was built in 1912. Throughout the years numerous visitors to Dow School have recounted paranormal experiences. As we approach Dia de los Muertos, MECA’s Dow School Cleanse will acknowledge and honor the stories and spirits of the building. As part of the tour, guests will learn Mexican beliefs and traditions for dealing with paranormal activity through music, dance, and ritual. Guest leader: Javier Herrera and Tlaloc Aztec musicians and dancers.

The community is invited to participate and create an altar in honor of a past relative or loved one. Family members honor their deceased loved ones with ofrendas or offerings such as photographs, bread, foods, flowers, toys, and other symbolic offerings. Personalize the altar with images of saints; favorite objects, or whatever you think would honor your loved one. This festival truly is a community cultural event celebrating our ancestors and Latin American traditions.

December 10th, 2010 La Pastorela- La Musica del Cielo La Pastorela- La Musica del Cielo, written by Peter Webster. In collaboration with the Mexican Consulate. Since the early days of Christianity in Spain and England, pastorelas or shepherd's plays have depicted the long trek of those first pastores to the holy site of the Nativity. Franciscan missionaries brought the pastorela to Mexico in the sixteenth century and this ancient folk tradition flourished throughout the New World.

December 12th, 2010 Fiesta Guadalupana Performance & Visual Art Exhibit / Silent Auction; in honor of La Virgen de Guadalupe. Fiesta Guadalupana Performance & Visual Art Exhibit / Silent Auction; in honor of La Virgen de Guadalupe.
This festivity is opened with the traditional serenade of Las Mananitas to La Virgen de Guadalupe. Prayers in song are followed and a procession leads the crowd into our outdoor pavilion where the Pastorela La Musica del Cielo, will be performed. This year MECA invites the entire community to pick up a wooden panel (Retablo) and create a dedicatory to the Virgen de Guadalupe to be sold in a silent auction. MECA invites the entire community to decorate small artificial holiday trees with the cultural theme of their choice to be sold in a silent auction. December 17th, 2010 La Posada in the Old Sixth Ward MECA presents a one day reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in the Old Sixth Ward. Posada festivities traditionally begin on December 16th and continue through January 5th. In this reenactment a procession with lit candles and song approach the doors of 3 houses. Together they sing and awaken the master of each house to ask for lodging. Those within the first two houses deny them entry. The third house warmly welcomes guests after learning their identity. A musical fiesta ensues with traditional food and drink.
