Arts Educators Needed!!!!

MECA is currently seeking to immediately employ experienced arts educators in the following fields for 21st Century Grant recipients in the Houston Independent School District. These after-school programs run from 3:00 to 6:00 pm for the entirety of the 2004-2005 school year. Resumes may be sent to alicevaldez@yahoo.com including day and evening telephone numbers. Art areas: Ballet Folklorico, Mariachi, piano, theatre, visual art, hip hop dance, African dance, poetry/spoken word and performance/multidisciplinary art.

Title: Instructor - Piano
Reports To: Director - Music

Summary of Job Description:
To lead in school, after-school and/or summer classes for students to develop their skills and creative abilities in the musical arts.

Specific Responsibilities:

• With Director-Music plan classes and tentatively schedule performance dates. Identify needs with respect to classroom space, instruments, music, materials, administrative support, etc.
• Lead regular classes (in-school and after-school) teaching students voice and/or instrumental techniques and skills.
• Secure instruments, music and other related equipment and materials in a locked storage space when classes are not in session.
• Maintain classroom control, applying specified behavior/discipline guidelines. Complete documentation requirements of funders in a timely manner. Participate in program evaluation process by providing your input and soliciting student input on instrumental music classes.
• Communicate expectations to students with respect to practice outside of class. Prepare students musically for recitals/performances. Provide direction/training to students in appropriate performance behavior and demeanor.
• Coordinate the acquisition of instruments, music, etc. with Director - Music.
• Coordinate participation of students in other MECA productions with Director - Music.
• Serve as a substitute for performing and visual art classes as needed.
• Assist Director - Music with other responsibilities as needed.

Expectations/Qualifications/Experience Required

• 3-5 years experience as a performing musician (piano) and an instructor of students
• Enthusiasm for working with young people and an ability to communicate instrumental techniques and skills in a way that is understandable to various age groups and various levels of expertise
