The application for the 2019 Ofrendas Altar Exhibition will be released on Monday, August 12 of this year.
Each year, MECA invites members of the community to build an altar (Ofrenda). Families build altars that feature photographs and sometimes personal belongings of their loved ones who have passed away. They may also include food like Pan de Muerto (bread of the dead) or specific food or snacks that they enjoyed. Another item that is present in a traditional altar is the Cempasúchil (Mexican Marigold), whose golden petals are believed to guide the dead on their way to the afterlife.
The event is curated by Luis Gavito, who also hosts the blessing of the altars, the opening event to the altar exhibit.
