MECA is pleased to announce Retablos32, its annual community exhibition of retablos which celebrates the Latin American tradition of devotional painting. After 31 years of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibitions at Lawndale Art Center, this event marks the second year the program will take place during MECA’s month-long celebration of Día de los Muertos at the Dow School campus in the Old Sixth Ward.
For this exhibition, MECA invites artists from the Houston community to create original works of art following the tradition of retablo making. Submitted works are presented to the public and will be offered for auction at MECA's Noche de Retablos closing celebration on November 8. This year, as in its previous iteration, this effort aims to return the sacred practice of retablo making to its cultural roots.
The exhibition is presented in conjunction with MECA's annual Offrendas exhibition and opens with a Blessing of the Altars on October 25, 2019, from 7 pm - 9pm. Retablos32 runs until its closing celebration and silent auction fundraiser, Noche de Retablos, on November 8.
Noche de Retablos
MECA presents its inaugural Noche de Retablos event - an annual silent auction fundraiser and closing celebration for Retablos32.
Purchase tickets for a fun-filled night at MECA’s Dow School Campus with art, live music and dance, drinks, lite bites, and the opportunity to bid on (and win!) one-of-a-kind retablos created by Houston's creative community!
