What is Día de los Muertos?
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a uniquely Mexican festivity and Latin American tradition observed annually on November 1st and 2nd. Día de los Muertos is a culmination of pre-Colombian heritage and Catholic influence honoring the souls of the dead in a lively, cheerful celebration. Our ancestors and dearly departed are beckoned to return in a spirited show of music, dance, theater, visual art and most essentially through a display of altars, or ofrendas. Vibrant marigolds, papel picado, food, water, Christian Saints and symbols adorn heartfelt altars in hope that these honored souls might accept our invitation. Now in its twenty-first year, MECA’s event has flourished into a month long event of festivities. It features altar exhibitions, community workshops, and a two day festival. MECA’s 2021 Día de los Muertos will be held at MECA’s colorful, art-filled campus located at the nationally recognized Historic Dow School in the heart of Houston’s Old Sixth Ward. We hope you will join us for this vital community-wide cultural celebration in-person & online. |
