SUPPORT SERVICES

Support Services

MECA utilizes support services in conjunction with the arts to ensure that community members are served in a holistic manner, meeting their social and emotional needs. Youth and their families receive counseling, and referrals for crisis intervention, substance abuse education, and long-term counseling. MECA collaborates with local service organizations to provide counseling referrals, life-skills training, and parenting classes.

Students receive academic assistance in the form of tutoring, mentoring, school advocacy, SAT preparation, and assistance with college selection, application, enrollment, and financial aid. MECA also offers its students academic and artistic scholarships to college-bound students through the Support Services Department.  Additionally, students find positive peer support through structured field trips and guest speakers that instruct youth on life skills. Support services are made available to students in all MECA programs and are open to all community youth and their families.

MECA recognizes that a student’s well-being is related to the well-being of family members and others whose lives may touch that of the child. Therefore, support services are made available at no charge to all family members of MECA students. Through social services support, MECA parents are encouraged to return to school. Legal, emotional, financial, and other assistance is available.

Tutoring
All MECA students must comply with a “no pass, no play” policy requiring sufficient academic performance in order to participate in recitals and other events. Students who are struggling in their academic classes may receive tutoring from our on-site tutors, community volunteers, or university students. Tutoring is provided at no additional cost for registered students and a small fee for students not enrolled in MECA's after school program.
Please call or visit us for more information.

Mentoring
The mentoring relationship is an important opportunity to serve as a counselor, advocate, and friend for the youth. Community members and MECA’s older students may serve as mentors for younger students.

Counseling | Individual + Family
MECA staff frequently provides counseling services for individuals experiencing difficult domestic, legal, and other personal situations. Individuals approach MECA for assistance because it is a place they know with people they trust, and MECA staff members are able to connect these individuals with a community network support system. MECA’s commitment to our students and community is to provide the support and professional guidance for a healthier future. As stated by MECA’s programs director, staff are motivated by “the moment where a client recognizes their worth – and that they matter.” For those cases which MECA lacks the resources to adequately address, referrals to social services agencies are provided.

College Readiness
MECA strongly emphasizes higher education as a worthy and attainable goal for MECA students, many of whom would be the first in their families to earn a college degree. To that end, MECA provides resources and personal assistance for students in researching universities, financial aid opportunities, scholarship search, and entrance exam preparation.
